Electrical Engineer

Summary:

– This exempt position functions within a team of other professionals, and reports directly to the Manager, Maintenance & Reliability.

The Electrical Engineer will lead all aspects of electrical engineering at the mine, and acts as the owner of the mine power and control systems.

The role will also be instrumental in the support of maintenance and reliability functions.

Essential Job Functions:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

Electrical Engineering

– Responsible for ensuring the operational integrity and statutory compliance of the mine electrical systems and electrical maintenance programs.

– Maintains electrical data, documentation, and drawings.

– Implement electrical engineering solutions to solve problems and contribute to the company’s Operational Excellence. 
– Manages all aspects of long-term mine power supply needs and strategies.

– Establish electrical standards and implement the management systems to maintain those standards. 
– Take the lead in the diagnosis and troubleshooting of electrical systems. 
– Monitor site power consumption and related charges and implement techniques and procedures to minimize energy costs. 
– Manage all aspects of site PLC/HMI systems to control all processes and provide data required for management of the mine. 
– Manages the design and function of methane monitoring system and all related hardware and controls
– Manages the design and function for all mine hoist controls and programming

Maintenance and Reliability

– Identifies opportunities to improve mine power and control system reliability.

– Ensures the appropriate preventive maintenance programs are in place for electrical installations
– Identifies and coordinates the required electrical training needs to support reliability.

– Work within Maintenance Team to implement process improvements.

– Support Reliable Asset Management objectives.

– Assist in setting standards for equipment purchases.

Project Engineering

– Supports in preparing annual capital budgets.

– Prepares and submits capital appropriation requests, including return calculations.

– Develops and manages capital project engineering and construction contracts.

– Implements construction/installation strategies that coordinate with production plan.

– Manages capital projects ensuring that critical path and budget goals are met.

 
Qualifications:

– To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience:

– An accredited degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience or equivalent work experience is required.

Knowledge of the following is required:

– Hoists and associated controls
– Allen Bradley based PLC system programing and troubleshooting for process and equipment control as well as associated – HMI graphics.

– MSHA regulations.

– NFPA 70, National Electric Code (NEC).

– Large DC and AC motor drives control systems which utilize power electronics for variable speed control.

– Electrical distribution systems ranging from 480V to 138 kV, including substations and MCC’s.

– Fiber optic and Ethernet based communications systems.

– Power factor correction systems.

– Electrical systems in a heavy industrial environment.

– Experience in heavy industry/mining setting is preferred.

Computer Skills:

– Complete proficiency with Microsoft Office programs is required. 
– AutoCAD, MS Project, CMMS systems, highly desirable.

– Other EE related software experience a plus.

Must be able to physically access all areas of underground mine; must be able to wear hard had , steel toe boots, safety glasses, safety cap and lamp, respirator, electrical arc flash PPE and be able to work in high reach areas.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

The noise level in the work environment can be loud.

Individual must be able to wear PPE, including but not limited to hearing protection, respirator, or full body harness when applicable.

Individual must be able to walk on uneven ground and perform repetitive motion.
