Safety and Health Specialist


This is a Full-time position in Luling, LA posted December 6, 2021.


The primary responsibilities of this role, Safety and Health Specialist, are to: 

  • Demonstrate general knowledge of process chemistry, equipment and work practices to recognize potential hazards and provide appropriate hazard mitigation and worker protection;
  • Ability to develop and manage multiple Safety and IH programs, examples include Confined Space Entry, lockout/Tagout, elevated Work, Hot Work, PPE, Hearing Conservation, Heat Stress, Indoor Air Quality;
  • Serve as owner and technical resource for site safety issues;
  • Serve as the technical lead to the Area Safety Coordinators to promote best practices and provide technical / functional leadership to the site Safety Procedures Review Team;
  • Participate on incident investigation teams as the Safety and Health representative;
  • Represent Safety and Health in project reviews, pre-startup safety reviews, hazard reviews, etc.;
  • Present topics and participate in unit-level and plant-wide safety meetings;
  • Participate in Safety and Health Management System internal and external audits;
  • Support and participate in the site Behavioral Based Safety process;
  • Serve as the Safety Team representative / Communications Officer during site emergencies;
  • Demonstrate leadership through consistent field reviews of routine work, projects and shutdowns;
  • Conduct worker observations and live audits of active work activities;
  • Maintain site occupational injury/illness classification and documentation including the posting and reporting of OSHA injuries per company and regulatory requirements;
  • Participate in the site OSHA VPP Program by assisting with VPP annual self-evaluations, on-site evaluations, and becoming certified as an OSHA SGE to serve on VPP evaluations of external sites;
  • Understand proper selection, use, and maintenance principles and limitations of personal protective equipment;
  • Provide customers with necessary coaching and motivation;
  • Identify, evaluate, and approve new PPE, tools and equipment for site use;
  • Serve as a primary liaison for the IH/Safety Teams in areas of internal customer interaction, coaching, motivation, communications, field observation, and hazard recognition;
  • Demonstrate a high level of understanding of applicable regulatory requirements;
  • Develop and deliver presentations and training on selected Safety/IH subjects for new employee orientation/compliance training, special events, guest Health and Safety training, and customer requested S&H meetings (e.g.

    PPE selection / use / maintenance, specific chemical / physical hazards, noise and hearing conservation, heat stress, ergonomics, IH/Safety Team projects and progress, etc.);

  • Conduct or assist in conducting various IH/Safety program internal and external audits;
  • Have knowledge of IH and Safety (OSHA and VPP) regulations and recognized best practices (ANSI, AIHA, ACGIH, ASSE) pertaining to work and industrial/chemical manufacturing sites.

More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Safety or relevant technical field of study;
  • At least five years of Health and Safety experience in the chemical or petrochemical industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Be able to communicate effectively with all disciplines;
  • Professional certification (ASP, CSP or CIH);
  • Lead and Asbestos Abatement project certifications;
  • Active OSHA Special Government Employee (SGE);
  • Experience leading RCA incident investigations through formal investigation process(s);
  • Knowledge and experience of industry safety codes and standards such as OSHA, PSM standard, EPA Risk Management Program, NFPA, ANSI, ISA, AND NEC;
  • Knowledge and experience with Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis, such as HAZOP, What If and LOPA techniques;
  • Strong influence skills and demonstrated ability to work with networks;
  • Knowledge with process control, and safety devices;
  • Detail-oriented with excellent time management, organizational and follow-up skills;
  • Be self-motivated and a team player;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both oral and written and the ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels;
  • Ability to analyze information and make decisions quickly and accurately;
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills with little supervision;
  • Self-directed, motivated, and ability to work as individual contributor as part of a diverse team;
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead projects, assignments and/or teams;
  • Be flexible and able to respond quickly to changing job demands and prioritize multiple responsibilities;
  • Computer proficiency in Windows based programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
