This is a Contract position in Shenandoah, LA posted January 9, 2022.

A reporter uses basic facts to develop compelling, timely and well-sourced stories that accurately reflect the nature of the community or beat the reporter covers, in this case Fremont and Page Counties in southwest Iowa. This should be a combination of weekly stories and other assignments undertaken in conjunction with a supervisor. This position also requires the reporter to take photos to accompany stories, so photography experience is a plus but not required. This is an entry-level position. An associate's degree is acceptable, a bachelor's degree in journalism or communications from a four-year accredited college is preferred but not required. Equivalent experience, including internships, in news reporting is also acceptable in lieu of a degree. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: * Perform and execute all work practices in a safe manner. Constant safety awareness is mandatory for all employees. * Completes work in a timely manner and meets deadlines. * Write stories clearly with little need for editing. * Takes note of errors and does not repeat them. * Spells correctly and never misspells names. * Pays close attention to beat, visits offices and officials covered on a daily basis and is seldom beaten by the competition. * Initiates and coordinates responses to sources, readers and other community members through email and phone calls. * Accepts story assignments, whether for news or special sections, cheerfully and completes them as quickly as possible. * Communicates frequently with editors and other newsroom staff to coordinate plans. * Can be reached by phone by editors or paginators within a reasonable amount of time to address concerns. * multimedia elements to go with stories. * Takes an interest in digital offerings, which are included but not limited to our website and social media. * Takes clear photographs and gets information and names for cutlines. * Valid driver's license and insurance required. * On-site, regular and reliable attendance is required. * Safely drive to and from various locations. * Assists in special projects as needed. * All other duties as assigned. NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: * Ability to follow all company policies and procedures including but not limited to attendance standards. * An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily * Must have exceptional spelling and writing abilities. * Ability to communicate effectively in person, on the telephone, and through electronic means. * Ability to write copy in accordance with good grammar, accurate spelling and AP style. * Ability to budget time and meet deadlines.
