Turnaround Master Scheduler


This is a Contract position in Geismar, LA posted November 17, 2021.

The Master Scheduler will support the overall preparation and execution of safe and predictable total plant outage by ensuring all activities are identified and linked in a Primavera schedule. The primavera schedule must be integrated with all Turnaround, Engineering Services, Maintenance and Operational activities planned for the Turnaround Event. The Master Scheduler will have accountability to ensure Primavera is implemented and employed so that earned value tools and work interdependencies can be monitored, tracked and displayed.


The Master Scheduler will be a member of the Turnaround Team and report to the Turnaround Leader. To be successful, the Master Scheduler must work closely with Planning team, client staff and contractors. Scope of role includes all disciplines and all departments involved in turnaround preparation and execution. There is no “typical” turnaround schedule and the number of activities in a schedule can vary on a large scale. To illustrate the dimension of the job, a typical large turnaround would include up to 1,000 work items, and a single work item would include from 5 to 15 steps, so a one can reasonably expect a turnaround schedule to be 5,000 to 15,000 lines or more.


The Turnaround Master Scheduler is accountable for detailed scheduling of turnaround activities, and to define the overall scheduling philosophy and process for gathering and integrating all activities in the turnaround schedule based on turnaround complexity. The Master scheduler will be accountable for the successful implementation of Primavera in the client Site Turnaround events.



  • Develop the scheduling architecture and coding to align with the overall turnaround execution strategy.
  • Lead the development of an integrated Primavera schedule that includes Operations, Maintenance, Reliability and Engineering, Sustaining and Growth Capital projects for all (potentially simultaneous) events.
  • Work with Event Managers and external contractors to define and staff a successful scheduling team.
  • Identify training needs to support scheduling communication and tracking.
  • Develop “earned value tools” such as progress vs. planned, hours consumed vs. hours earned, critical and near critical path items to support forecasting of end date and resource requirements.
  • Put a plan in place to ensure the IT infrastructure is in place to support the scheduling function during critical phases of execution.
  • Maintain various reporting systems for ensuring that documentation is accurate and timely.
  • Document key information for analysis which includes earned value, cost performance index, schedule performance index.
  • Collaborate with planners in development of work order task lists to ensure high standard of Oracle data integrity (including the WBS/AFE structure), in the correct structure to facilitate automated to/from Primavera.
  • Work closely with RC, Maintenance, Operations, Process and Engineering personnel to set turnaround priorities, resolve execution issues and provide leadership in troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Challenge all work plan to ensure the schedule is optimized to the shortest critical path.
  • Owner of scheduling procedure, lessons learned and best practices.

Turnaround Strategy

  • Schedule and monitor all resource constrained activities for Phase 2 (Scope Development) and all subsequent phases.
  • Develop level 1 and level 2 schedules to support event as required.

Turnaround Planning

  • Act as the sole Scheduler for activities for all events.
  • Support development of field execution team (through scheduling, critical path and levelling exercises).
  • Develop schedule updating expectations and responsibilities.
  • Review, understand and apply planning & scheduling management plan.
  • Develop holistic high-level schedule strategy that incorporates all functions, including MI, Capital, FCM and maintenance.
  • Create work and cost breakdown structures (WBS & CBS) in Primavera.
  • Interact with work preparation team and Operations/Maintenance Coordinators for full awareness of work execution constraints. Highlights upcoming constraints in time to mitigate them.
  • Ensure all work plans include resource duration and execution estimate and that all estimates are consistent; this include the ability to check the conformance of the estimate with the applicable standard norms.
  • Strategically schedule turnaround activities, scheduling task lists prepared by the Turnaround Planners.
  • Complete schedule audit and assurance activities of the respective event schedule


  • Perform schedule mechanics checks (offline diagnostics) to verify schedule structure.
  • Complete schedule quality reviews to optimize schedule.
  • Identify critical and near critical paths and confirm minimal / optimal turnaround duration.
  • Participate in desktop execution optimization reviews to challenge and improve critical work package durations.
  • Participate in constructability reviews for turnaround scope.
  • Work with Operations to ensure understanding of task sequencing for formulation of shutdown, decon, commissioning and start up sequencing. Provide guidance to translate Operations task sequencing into schedule timeline activities, ensuring sequencing is incorporated into turnaround master schedule and properly linked to the respective maintenance activities.
  • Develop ‘what if’ scenario schedules and collaborate with execution supervisor and event manager to select the scenario to be included in the baseline schedule.
  • Establish the schedule baseline for monitoring execution progress, productivity.
  • Ensure all planned inspections are included in the schedule.
  • Ensure lessons learned are captured.
  • Coach teams for pre-execution activities.

Pre-Turnaround Management

  • Support issuance of weekly pre-work schedule.
  • Monitor & report integrated schedule progress against plan and develop corrective actions if target KPIs are not achieved. This includes:


  • Weekly group discussion on longest path, critical and near critical activities.
  • Report event progress identifying any specific progress concerns.
  • Review the emergent work schedule.
  • Develop and monitor Pre-work schedule so that it seamlessly dovetails with execution phase.
  • Prepare and coach execution team, including contractors, on schedule update responsibilities, expectations, and training program.

Turnaround Execution Management

  • Update and issue daily turnaround schedule complete with 2-day look ahead.


  • Monitor & report integrated schedule progress against plan and develop corrective actions if target KPIs are not achieved. This includes:
  • Daily group discussion on longest path, critical and near critical activities.
  • Report event progress identifying any specific progress concerns.
  • Review the emergent work schedule.
  • Liaise with site personnel to ensure the right work is being done at the right time using the right resources in the safest, most fiscally responsible, and efficient manner.
  • Interface with Contractors’ coordinators daily during the execution phase and provide updated schedule whenever there is a significant change against the baseline schedule.
  • Oversee and communicate scheduling activities.
  • Incorporate approved discovery/found work and addenda into schedule.
  • Level, analyze and report schedule progress and communicate with Event Manager and Coordinators.
  • Work with Cost Control Specialist to develop updated forecast spend and duration using earned value and actuals.
  • Record daily snapshots of Primavera graphics including earned vs. burned as well as duration projections.
  • Attend daily progress/accountability meetings.

Post-Turnaround and Evaluation

  • Support issuance of weekly post-work schedule.
  • Monitor & report integrated schedule progress against plan and develop corrective actions if target KPIs are not achieved. This includes:


  • Weekly group discussion on longest path, critical and near critical activities.
  • Report event progress identifying any specific progress concerns.
  • Review the emergent work schedule.
  • Directly lead scheduling, post work and SAP clean-up activities until event execution completion.
  • Participate in after-action-reviews and incorporate lessons learned.
  • Develop high-level (level 1) preliminary schedule for next turnaround based on 80/20 scope.


The successful candidate will have a 2-year technical school diploma with 10+ years of related experience or a combination of 12+ year’s post-secondary technical education (including Journeyman ticket or steam tickets) and related experience. The following attributes and experience is required:

  • Proven capacity to create and maintain complex schedules
  • Advanced proficiency with the following: Primavera P6
  • Ideal candidate will have Oracle experience as well
  • Demonstrated experience in a supervisory or leadership role (Lead Scheduler, Project Coordinator)
  • High level understanding of plant system processes
  • Proven ability to lead, develop and implement improvement strategies
  • Challenge assumptions and explore options widely
  • Ability to engage across boundaries during complex troubleshooting and continuous improvement initiatives

Ideally, the successful candidate will also have the following skills and experience:

  • Project management experience
  • Capable of assessing progress with regard to objectives
  • Turnaround experience
  • Experience mentoring others
  • Previous experience in a petrochemical asset
