Senior Environmental Manager

We are seeking a Senior Environmental Manager to lead a team of 20 environmental professionals who provide compliance support to our operating facilities across North America involved in the manufacture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, ammonia, syngas, atmospheric gases, helium, carbon dioxide as well as cryogenic equipment manufacturing.

The position will be based at our world headquarters in Allentown, PA, or the U.S.

Gulf Coast (Houston, Baton Rouge, or New Orleans).

The team supports a variety of compliance programs including Title V permits, water, waste, SARA, and TRI, and plays a key role in new capital projects by developing and executing effective environmental strategies to obtain all vital environmental permits and approvals needed to build, own, and operate new plants.

The successful candidate will identify and assess the environmental risks of our operations to align with regulatory and other country-specific factors that govern compliance and protection, which involves developing and implementing strategies and programs.

This includes negotiating and acquiring permits followed by effective overall permit compliance and administration.

Principal accountabilities:

  • Develop and implement long term environmental and permitting strategies in support of the North American operating facilities as well as new capital investments.
  • Supervise regional team leaders and senior-level environmental engineers.
  • Provide environmental leadership through proactive environmental support to all businesses to ensure compliance and protect the environment.
  • Implement the most efficient solutions to environmental issues.

    Partner with commercial, operations, law, real estate, government relations, engineering, and executive leadership.

    External clients include customers, governmental agencies, and the public.

  • Maintain a robust environmental management structure in the region, through identifying and assessing the impact of emerging environmental regulation to Air Products operations by state and by media (air, water, waste, noise).
  • Assist in development, sharing and implementation of global standards and best practices in environmental compliance and protection.
  • Lead interactions with governmental agencies and industry associations that plan and manage common environmental interests and develop solutions to industry issues.
  • Support external communications related to the progress and accomplishments of the corporation in environmental compliance and protection.


  • Bachelor/Master of Science degree in engineering (chemical engineering preferred), environmental science, or a related field of study.
  • Environmental compliance, remediation and permitting experience in multiple U.S.

    states; and preferably in Canada (Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec Provinces) and Mexico.

  • Science, engineering, statistical and analytical skills to assess Air Products plants and processes against environmental regulations and permits.
  • Experience with environmental risk management and due diligence including Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) associated with property transactions.
  • Experience in industrial gases, petrochemical, refining, or related industries.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience supervising senior technical teams and/or individuals preferred.
  • Strong communication and influence skills, and effective at collaborating with all levels, including direct negotiation with authorizing agencies.
  • Experience with root cause analysis, problem solving, best practices, and continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of the technologies employed and business drivers of the petrochemical or refining industries is desirable.

    Possessing knowledge of the Industrial Gas technology, business and marketplace, including key refinery customer sector, is a plus.

  • Ability to travel 30%.
